CIMRM 1290 - Cautes and Cautopates and two other statues. Neuenheim, Germany.

Four statues, probably indicating a second Mithraeum, were found at Neuenheim in 1953 in a layer of burning debris.

1290. Mr. G. Poensgen kindly sent me a photograph of a statue of a torchbearer, found by Dr. B. Heukemes at Neuenheim. Cautopates holds with two hands a torch downwards. The monument is in Heidelberg, Kurpfälzisches Museum and is still to be published (see fig. 339).

Beim Aushub der Baugrube für ein Einfamilienhaus an der Ecke Kastellweg/Schröderstraße wurde 1953 eine in römischer Zeit verfüllte Eintiefung von 10 m Ausdehnung und 1,30 m Tiefe erfasst. Der Archäologe Berndmark Heukemes konnte aus einer Schicht von Brandschutt auch vier Steinskulpturen bergen, die für die bildliche Ausstattung eines Mithrastempels charakteristische Bildmotive zeigen. Die Gesamtsituation des Befundes lässt vermuten, dass es sich bei der Eintiefung um einen Teil des Tempels handelt. Dieser wurde nach Auskunft der datierenden Funde spätestens am Anfang des 2. Jahrhunderts nördlich des Neuenheimer Steinkastells und am Rand der Zivilsiedlung errichtet und war bis Ende des 2. oder zu Beginn des 3. Jahrhunderts in Benutzung. Zwei der Bildnisse zeigen die beiden Begleitfiguren des Mithras: Cautes und Cautopates. I.e.: In 1953, during excavations for a family house on the corner of Kastellweg/Schröderstraße, a ditch 10 x 1.3 m in size was discovered, from the Roman period, which had been filled in. The archaeologist, Berndmark Heukemes, retrieved four sculptures from a layer of burning, which show characteristics of a Mithraic temple. The overall situation of the finds suggests that it is part of a temple. This must be dated as later than the stone fort at Neuenheim, from the beginning of the 2nd century, and built at the edge of the civilian settlement, and in use until the end of the second or beginning of the third century. The image above shows two of the sculptures, Cautes and Cautopates.

An inventory number is given: Inv.No. 1990/1120.a. The top of the figure of Cautes has been repaired, as it was found without shoulders or neck. Both statues carry the remains of white primer, on which traces of red remain.

Unfortunately there is no indication of what the other two figures discovered were.
