This is the fifth treatise of Tertullian which Mr. E has published and translated. One will find here the same qualities of concision and clarity. Mr. E is one of the greatest experts on Tertullian, which does not prevent him from recognizing what he owes with the others, in particular with J. W. Ph. Borleffs and R. F. Refoulé. Until 1916 no-one knew any more of any manuscript of this treatise. The text was based on the princeps edition of Mr. Mesnart and on the corrections of the following editors. The discovery of Trecensis 523, originating in Clairvaux, revealed a text appreciably different from the base manuscript of Mesnart. But the agreement of the two families does not always bring back for us the original and it is necessary to resort to conjectural corrections. Mr. E again takes issue with the preceding editors. He proposes some other of their correction moreover with reserve. Thus 8,9 crucem deformantes instead of Christum deformantes, which appears me to deserve to retain attention. Worse is the correction parvo oblatum for patri oblatum: that of Fulvius Ursinus (pauperi) is paleographically more probable. In 10,38 the passage of spiritu to aqua is not explained from the paleographic point of view, but it is quite true why aqua tinguitur is not comprehensible in the context. In his comment (p. 82), Mr. E suggests that it is perhaps an scribal error of Tertullian ("a slip of his pen"), but what he surely wanted to write was spiritu tinguitur. Finally in 18,1 the apparatus suggests cedendum instead of credendum. B. Botte.

M. E. est un excellent connaisseur de Tertullien et on retrouve ici les mêmes |
Mr. E is an excellent expert of Tertullien and one finds here the same qualities of clarity and judgement that are found in his other editions. It should be recognized however that, in spite of the discovery of Trecensis 523, the textual tradition is very poor and that there remain obscurities. I am astonished that Mr. E maintained in 7,1 the reading christus dicitur against the correction of J. W. Ph. Borleffs christi dicti, which appears to me to be obviously essential. In 8,2 christum deformantes appears suspect to him and he would prefer crucem deformantes. However he relegates this conjecture to the apparatus. I believe that christum is faulty, but I do not think that crucem is the right reading. I have another correction to propose that I will publish in a note to appear soon. B. Botte
