The "adversus Praxeam " of Tertullian is undoubtedly the most significant discussion of trinitarian theology of the ante-nicene period. Mr. Evans establishes the text of it while following as close as possible the manuscript tradition and by resolutely leaving to one side hazardous conjectures. In addition to a translation in English, the work includes invaluable chapters on the trinitarian heresies of the time, the exact place of the African doctor in the controversy and on its influence in the immediately posterior writers. Finally and especially a literal commentary on the text and a study of the theological terminology of Tertullian contribute to give this work an exceptional value. One can only concur with the author's wish to conclude the task which he proposed, by restoring to us those works of Tertullian which have awaited for more than half-a-century their critical publication in the Corpus of Vienna.
