Draco schoen!
I have a suspicion that there must be more to the story, but I’m not sure where to look. The only reason I found this was that it was in-column above another Isidore passage I was looking up.
What I like best is that, with all the fabulous beast books I’ve read over the years, there’s a quote I’ve never seen sitting right in the middle of one of Western Civ’s major authors. There’s no shortage of niftiness for us all still to encounter.
* The previous post shall not be construed to mean that St. Isidore supports the TV Trope of “Crystal Dragon Jesus,” or the George RR Martin story “The Way of Cross and Dragon.” Because they are silly.
Serendipity is a wonderful thing. It does make you wonder how much of what we know is purely related to what is commonly read in university courses. Isidore wasn’t, that’s for sure!
