From my diary

My apologies for the silence.  Unfortunately I caught Covid at the start of the month, and I have been out of action ever since.  The symptoms are no worse than a cold, but I’m still testing positive even now.  I gather that rushing back to work afterwards is one of the primary causes of Long Covid, which I am not anxious to acquire.  So I shall come back slowly!  Be careful out there.

  1. Get well soon! Davila over at Paleojudaica had a similar problem.
    I blame the curse of POxy 5575 . . .

  2. Hello, I hope you recover soon. I work with translations from Greek into English all the time and I am on a hunt for quotes from Patristic Literature. Some are really hard to find. There was one quote in a book which I only found online: https://archive.org/details/chrysostom-devil-bryson-2014/mode/2up?view=theater. In fact, this is how I got here, by searching your name mentioned in that book. I am trying to reference this book as a footnote, not sure how to do it, but will find a way eventually. I think this book exists on paper with another title and translated by someone else, but I don’t have it.

I was wondering is there a way to search in your database formed of all these rare texts?

  3. Actually, I wanted to ask your advice. I am looking for a long time for a quote from G.D. MANSI (Sacrorum conciliorum nova et amplissima collectio) which has no index and is rather difficult to decipher. Do you know of a more practical version of it?

  4. Hello,

Hunting for quotes is fun but hard work. I don’t have a database of texts, so I’m afraid I can do no more than you are doing, and google things. I see that Bryson’s translation of that Chrysostom text was done in 2014, so it would not be surprising if someone else has had a go since. I hope they acknowledge him!

I don’t have an electronic version of Mansi – sorry!

    Best wishes,

    Roger Pearse

  5. No worries, I would have been very surprised if you did! I live in a place which has a good patristic library, so I cannot complain. Thanks for your answer.
